The Horniman Museum, the borough archive, the story of Hilly Fields and Lewisham Market, and the historic parks around Lewisham, Ladywell, Lee and Brockley.

The main museum near Lewisham is the Horniman Museum and Gardens in Forest Hill, free to enter and open daily. Lewisham town centre has no large museum, but the borough has one major museum, an archive and several parks with a story. Facts here come from the venues and the council's own pages.

The Horniman Museum and Gardens

The Horniman is at 100 London Road, Forest Hill, SE23 3PQ, in Lewisham borough. Its plan your visit page says the Museum is open daily from 10am to 5.30pm, the Gardens from 7.15am (8am on Sundays and bank holidays) to 6.30pm, and that the Museum and Gardens are free. There is a charge for the Aquarium, Butterfly House, Voyage to the Deep and some events, and tickets should be booked ahead for those. It says the museum is a five- to 10-minute walk from Forest Hill station and that two galleries, Nature Gallery and the Nature Discovery Den, are closed until 5 February 2027.

The Horniman's history page says it first opened as the Surrey House Museum in 1890 in the Horniman family's home, was renamed the Horniman Museum and Library in 1901 when it reopened in a purpose-built building, and is named after Frederick Horniman, who ran his father's tea business and became an MP in 1895. It describes the collection as around 350,000 objects, including internationally important anthropology and musical instrument collections, and addresses the colonial context of how the collection was built; read that page for the museum's own account.

Lewisham Heritage: the borough archive

Lewisham Heritage says its earliest record dates from 1476 and that it holds historical maps, street directories, electoral registers, school records and photographs. Its reading room is at Catford Library, with free access to FindMyPast, Ancestry UK and the British Newspaper Archive. It is by appointment only; you need an Archives Card, and appointments run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and the first Saturday of the month. The page also notes that Lewisham was mostly in Kent until 1889 and lists the districts the archive covers, including Blackheath, Brockley, Hither Green and Ladywell.

Hilly Fields

Near Ladywell, Hilly Fields has a summit 175 feet above sea level with views over Lewisham and the City, according to the council's park page. It says that when plans were announced to build over the land, Octavia Hill, one of the three founders of the National Trust, helped local people campaign and raise funds. London County Council bought it, with donations from charities and City companies, and it was dedicated to the public on 16 May 1896. A stone circle of twelve granite stones and two shadow-casting stones was put up in 2000 to mark the millennium. The park has a cafe and a Green Flag award.

Lewisham Market's history

The council's markets page says Lewisham Market began in 1906. It records that in 1944 a V1 rocket landed 100 yards from the Clock Tower, killing 56 people, injuring 99 and demolishing part of the High Street shops. Opening times are in the town centre guide.

Parks with a past

  • Manor House Gardens, Lee, was restored in 2000 and has a lake, a fountain, a walled flower garden and an ice-house, according to the council's park page. The page gives no more history, so we say no more.
  • Ladywell Fields runs between Catford and Ladywell for about a mile, with a river running through three fields and a Green Flag, per its council page.
  • Beckenham Place Park is the borough's largest green space at 98 hectares, says its council page. The park's history page says John Cator bought the estate and built the mansion in 1762, and that a £5 million Heritage Lottery Fund grant in 2016 funded restoration of the Homestead buildings and gardens.

More outdoor ideas are in the parks and kids guide. The council's Lewisham Central page also lists Lewisham Arthouse and public art among the centre's leisure and arts sites; it gives no further details.
