Every home is placed in a band from A to H by the Valuation Office Agency, based on its value on 1 April 1991 rather than today's price. The council's bands and charges page gives these 2026/27 annual charges:

  • Band A (up to £40,000): £1,491.56
  • Band B (£40,001 to £52,000): £1,740.14

The page lists the totals per band and does not break them down into the council's share and the Greater London Authority precept.

How do I pay?

The council's pay your council tax page lists these options:

  • Direct Debit, which the council recommends. You can pay monthly (10 or 12 instalments), quarterly, weekly, half-yearly or yearly, and set it up online with your council tax account number, address and bank details.
  • Online with your account number from the bill.
  • Online banking, quoting your account number as the reference (the account details are on the council's page).
  • By phone on 020 8690 8707 with a debit or credit card.
  • At a Post Office or PayPoint using the barcode on your bill. Pay at least seven days before the due date.

Instalments are due on the 1st or 15th of the month, and the 8th or 22nd on request, unless you pay by Direct Debit. Your MyLewisham account shows your payments and charges for previous years.

What discounts can I claim?

The reductions and exemptions page names a 25% discount for a single adult living alone, and a 25% apprentice discount. It also lists reductions for full-time students, carers, disabled people with adapted homes, care leavers up to age 25, people on low incomes, empty properties, hospital or care home residents, and people who are severely mentally impaired. Percentages other than the two above are not given on that page. Each has its own application form linked from it.

If you are on a low income, the council tax reduction scheme is the route to a reduction.

What do I do when I move?

Use a MyLewisham account. Per the manage your council tax page, choose "tell us you've moved" and register if you do not have an account, whether you are leaving, moving within or moving into the borough. New residents use the change of address form before they get an account number, and there is a contact form to request one.

What if I can't pay?

Tell the council before you miss a payment. The problems paying page says you can set up a repayment plan online, book a summons surgery appointment and get free debt advice. If no plan is agreed and a liability order is obtained, the council says it has more powers to recover the debt.

Is my band wrong?

The council has a disputes, appeals and refunds section under its council tax pages, linked from the council tax home page.
