EV Charging Points in Lewisham: Where, How Much and How to Request One
The types of public charger Lewisham Council provides, how the CPZ permit rule works for lamp column chargers, and how the Zest rollout is adding street chargers.
Lewisham Council says it has installed over 100 electric vehicle charge points across the borough, and that more are planned. It describes rapid 50kW, standard 7kW and 5kW lamp column chargers. The council points drivers to Zap-Map for live locations and availability, and its page gives no tariff.
Lewisham Council says it has installed over 100 electric vehicle (EV) charge points across the borough, and that more are planned. This guide explains what is on offer for drivers in Lewisham town centre, Ladywell, Lee, Hither Green, Brockley and Blackheath, using the council's own page. It does not list individual charger addresses, because the council points drivers to Zap-Map for live locations and availability.
What types of charger are there?
The council's electric vehicle charge points page describes three categories:
- Rapid chargers (50kW): on Transport for London red routes and at selected council car parks close to town centres.
- Standard 7kW chargers: on residential streets and at many council car parks, in dedicated EV bays.
- 5kW lamp column chargers: mostly in residential areas, fitted to bollards next to lamp posts.
How do I find one?
The council says to check the location and availability of all existing charge points with Zap-Map. The council car park list on its car parks page notes that electric vehicles receive significantly lower parking rates than petrol and diesel ones, so see our parking guide for tariffs.
How do I pay?
You can subscribe to a particular charging provider or pay as you go, which needs no registration beforehand. The council says pay as you go is more flexible than a subscription but tends to cost more per kilowatt-hour. Charging prices are set by the operator, and the council page does not give a tariff.
Do I need a permit to use a lamp column charger?
If a 5kW lamp column bay is inside a controlled parking zone and is not marked as a dedicated EV bay, the council says you must hold a valid resident CPZ parking permit to use the charger during the CPZ operating hours. Dedicated EV bays are the 7kW chargers. The council also does not allow charging cables to be laid across pavements between a vehicle and a property.
Can I ask for a charge point near my home?
The council's page says more charge points are planned. Check the EV charge points page for how to suggest a location.
